In a nail-biting finish, Bangladesh’s U-19 women’s cricket team secured a stunning victory against England in a super over during their second warm-up match ahead of the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
The match, played on Wednesday, January 15, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, delivered plenty of drama and excitement, giving the Junior Tigresses a much-needed boost before the tournament kicks off on January 18.
Bangladesh, led by Sumaiya Akter, achieved a historic win, as this was their first-ever victory over England in women’s cricket at any level.
The thrilling finish came after Bangladesh had already impressed in their recent performances, reaching the final of the Asia Cup last December and defeating Sri Lanka in another warm-up match for the World Cup.
The day’s match ended in a deadlock, pushing the game into a super over.
England, batting first after winning the toss, posted 113 runs for 9 wickets in their 20 overs.
Bangladesh, chasing 114, found themselves needing just 1 run off the last ball, with only 1 wicket in hand. But in a tense moment, Nishita Akter was run out on the final delivery, taking the game into a dramatic super over.
In the super over, Bangladesh’s batters stepped up, scoring 11 runs off England’s left-arm spinner Cortin Coleman.
A major contribution came from Sadia Akter, who smashed an unbeaten 8 runs off 3 balls, including a huge six on the fourth ball, setting England a challenging target.
On the bowling front, pacer Habiba Akter rose to the occasion for Bangladesh.
In a superbly bowled over, England needed 4 runs off the final delivery, but Prisha Tanawala could only manage 2 runs, sealing a 2-run win for Bangladesh.
Earlier in the main match, Sadia Akter had also shone with the bat, scoring 20 runs from 17 balls, while Anisa Akter grabbed 3 crucial wickets.
This remarkable win was a big moment for the Bangladesh women’s team, as the national women’s side has never managed to beat England before, and the U-19s had never played against them until now.
As the World Cup approaches, the Junior Tigresses have been drawn into Group D, where they will face strong teams like Australia, Scotland, and Nepal.
The 16-team tournament will conclude with the final on February 2.
